CCPD Marine Safety Unit

Josh Swain and Jon McGinley are now part of Corpus Christi Police Department Marine Safety Patrol. This special unit has been working closely with the Texas Parks and Wildlife in their marine safety certification. Josh invited me out to help with their press release. "Helping" meant that I was the Guinea pig to get boarded for their press release at channel 3. I was glad that they didn't test out their pepper spray or their tazer.

Great Catches at the Texas Land Cut

Once in a while you get a chance to go out with an ol' fishin buddy. Josh Swain and I haven't gone fishing together for a long time and it was great to get together and bend a few poles! The day sure didn't disappoint either... using live shrimp from Clem's marina Josh started off by catching this little Jack Crevalle which is a fish you don't often see at the Land Cut.

Black Drum are still very plentiful at the land cut as Josh shows off this nice catch for the dinner table.

The speckled trout were striking our hooks as well as we made some nice catches. These trout can really give you a fight and makes it a lot of fun.

I was able to catch my personal best speckled trout on this day at 24 3/4 inches. Our speckled trout boat record is still held by Bryan Weatherston.

We couldn't of asked for a better day to get on the water with a great fishin buddy. You might remember Josh in our blog post of May 2008. Wow, that was 5 years ago and we're still bloggin away. Josh was fishing with me when I caught my biggest black drum in March of 2009.

Not a bad line-up of fish for the day. We were just a redfish shy of a Texas Slam. We caught a rat red, but we only count the keepers.

Texas Stingray Babies

Dr Matt Ficenec sent this video over of an unusual catch. Yep, a stingray giving birth to several more. How many stingray tails do you see in this video? It's kind of creepy looking. Anyway, Dr Matt Ficenec'a family became his surgical team as they helped deliver these stingray babies.

Check-out our podcast show about stingray's where we shared a few stories about getting barbed by a stingray. These things can really do some damage! Be careful out there!

27 Inch Speckled Trout at the Land Cut

Charlie Cook's last trip to the Texas Land Cut proved to be a great day! We knew that we had a window of opportunity to get down to the land cut before the 30 mile per hour winds kicked in the afternoon. Pick up the last of the live shrimp at Clem's marina and headed south.

After pulling in a nice redfish the bite got very slow. Then we saw 2 dolphin swimming away from our area. No doubt that our fish were scattered with those beasts in the water. We decided to be patient and it payed off.

Charlie was able to hook this beautiful 27 inch speckled trout. She was a nice fight as she finally gave it up and into the boat. As things turned out we were only able to fish for about 1 1/2 hours. The wind started to get stronger with whitecaps in the land cut. We knew that we would be crossing rocky slough and Baffin bay would be tough enough so we were happy with what we accomplished fishin.

Great to have Bill along visiting Charlie and Margery from Colorado

It's Charlie's last trip fishin with us here in Texas because he and his wife Margery have been on an LDS mission where they teach Gospel Doctrine to college student age groups. We know them as Elder & Sister Cook. After serving one year here in the Corpus Christi area they will be headed back home to Colorado in a few weeks. We'll sure miss them!

Not a bad flounder to catch for your Manual Lara first one! Great job! Oso bridge was a hot spot for flounder on this day. Another great location for shore fishing is the Oso Railroad.

Cook's Black Drum Adventure

Mike Cook visiting his brother, Charlie,  from Tucson Arizona went of a fishing adventure with us to the Texas Land Cut. The weather was very hot with mild to calm winds from the south, southeast. Stocked up with live shrimp from Clem's marina we were ready for a nice morning of fishing.

The black drum were plentiful on this trip to the Land Cut. We managed to catch a speckled trout and a sheapshead.

Northern Winds at the Land Cut

Ran down to the Land Cut against my own intuition. Yep, northern winds just aren't that great for Land Cut fishing. Perhaps I should have gone to the meadows or fish emmords hole and pure oil on the eastern spoils side or even drift fished those areas. But, I went to the cut thinking I would take advantage of the forecasted wind shift from the east. With winds only at about 5 to 10 mph (basically calm) its been my experience that the bite is slow but when you do get one, it's worth the wait. The wind did shift to the east as forecasted but the hardheads became the main attraction. Today just didn't happen. Caught a nice speckled trout and a black drum for my efforts. Nice day to be on the water and hope to redeem myself soon.

Catfish at Camp Karankawa

Great camp-out at Camp Karankawa on Corpus Christi Lake with the LDS Corpus Christi Young Single Adults! There were several different activities planned that included archery, canoeing, and fishing. Big thanks to Elder Cook for bringing his fresh water gear and bait for a little fishin on the pier!
This is a real knee slapper.
Tabor Johnson found a nice fishing spot from his canoe and caught a nice catfish.
Mary Terry Moreno caught her first fish and didn't know it. Yep, she got bored and handed me her fishing pole and I discovered she had a fish on the hook. lol, Mary Terry screamed and grabbed the pole back and landed this beauty. Elder Cook gave her the "Fish Tale Slap".
Ben & Kirsten enjoy some R & R on the pier hoping to catch something.
Kirsten Bullington catches her first fish ever! She gave Ben the honors of getting slime on his hands!

Loni gets into the action in catching a nice catfish!
Then catches another like a pro!
Tabor get into the action as well and shows off this beauty.
We think his 3rd catch was the same fish and we disqualified it. lol.
 Just a Lazy Texas Afternoon.
Great weekend and a big thanks to Adam Killian and the supporting cast in making this camp-out a success!

Fishing Florida at Tarpon Key

Patti and I had a great trip to Florida Hudson area where we visited my father in law's blueberry farm. After picking blueberries we took a nice break to go fishing. My friend Captain Clay Eavenson who fishes the Tampa Bay area was able to hook us up with Captain Greg McCullough. Our day began launching from O'Neill's Marina in St Petersburg Florida about an hour south from the blueberry farm.

We had a great day fishing the flats near Tarpon Key for redfish but landed several slot speckled trout instead. We decided to toss back our catches since we were leaving town soon. The morning was great with a nice cool breeze and over cast clouds making it an enjoyable time with my wife fishing. We suddenly had a cold front move in on us and the rain shortened our day.

Surprisingly enough, Tarpon Key is part of a protected bird sanctuary of Pinellus National Wildlife Refuge. You can see this island in the middle of the above picture provided. While fishing the flats near Tarpon Key there were an amazing variety of birds along the shore to watch and photograph.

Spring Break Land Cut Fishing

What should a few friends do on a spring break day? Just Go Fishin. That's exactly what we did. The weather gave us a break with 11 - 20 mph Southeast winds and a high of 80 degrees. It looked like we couldn't have a bad day. We had the added bonus of cloud cover from the sun for most of the day. After picking up some live shrimp at Clems marina, Joe Cantu, David Weatherston, and I headed South to the Land Cut. Even though the bite was slow, each bite was quality! Catching several nice sized black drum, speckled trout, redfish, and sheepshead.

Joe Cantu with a 22 inch black drum
David Weatherston with a 27 inch black drum
I caught my personal best redfish and managed to capture back the "boat redfish record" with this nice 31 1/2 inch bull. She was a real beauty. After a few pictures we released her back in the water.
My strangest catch of the day was this black drum. Not that the black drum was strange, but how she was caught. By some dumb luck or bad luck for the fish, I hooked a leader previously in this fishes mouth. You can see the circle hook in drums mouth with a broken leader line where my hook latched on.What are the odds of this happening?

Terrific spring break day at the land cut enjoying fishing with some of my buddies. Hope y'all enjoy the video we put together. Have a great day of fishin,
