ACND opens

$1M renovation project
Boat Launching Facility & Waterfront Access
of Copano Causeway South

As of November 1, 2005 this "waterfront access" facility has been operated under the jurisdiction of the Aransas County Navigation District No.1 (ACND). The pier, along with additional lands, was obtained by the ACND from the State of Texas. The ACND officials, Rockport-Fulton Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Bay Blazer Team were on-hand Wednesday, April 22 to formerly open the facility which ultimately benefits of the citizens of Aransas County and its growing number of visitors.

About the Renovation Project

This $1 million South End Renovation Project of the Copano Causeway has been totally renovated to include the following: a double ramp layout allowing for two boats to launch at one time, plenty of dock space all around for easy access while loading gear, piers, a breakwater to keep from silting in and a large concrete parking lot for the angler’s vehicle and trailer. It also includes a bulk head on the northern side to lessen the effects of the hard North waves and a nice sidewalk of at least 70-80 ft. Additionally, a new restroom facility has been built to serve the boaters and the users of the Copano fishing pier along with new fish cleaning and picnic tables. The entire facility is well lighted and built to ADA specifications. A pipeline, nearly one-half mile long, to carry fresh water to the site was also installed.

This project was funded by Texas Parks & Wildlife 75/25 split grant with the Aransas County Navigation District.

“This is an extremely popular facility. We will have no more waiting in line to get your boat in the water and we feel we have built a much more safe overall area for our residents and visitors,” states ACND Harbor Master Keith Barrett.

History of the Copano Causeway Pier

Copano Bay Fishing Pier, formerly a concession-operated state park, is a 5.9-acre park located five miles north of Rockport in Aransas County. The fishing pier, acquired by transfer of jurisdiction from the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in 1967, was opened the same year. The old causeway was cut to aid boat traffic, so the pier now has 2,500 feet on the north side and 6,190 feet on the south side.

Copano Causeway Pier and Boat Launch information

The pier is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is lighted year round. It is located 5 miles north of Rockport on State Highway 35. For more information, contact the ACND at aransasnav1@yahoo.com or call 361-729-6661. For fishing information for Copano Causeway North is 361-425-8325 or Copano Causeway South is 361-425-8326.
